Thunderstorms have struck Britain as the record-breaking heatwave continues.
Lightning strikes have been seen in Devon and Cornwall this evening, after the Met Office issued thunderstorm warnings for all four nations in the United Kingdom.
The forecaster expects thunderstorms in northern Scotland and south-west England this evening and on Friday, when they are also set to hit Northern Ireland, northern England and the rest of Scotland.
The stormy conditions follow another day of record-breaking heat, with the highest ever June temperature of 36.7C recorded at Merryfield in Somerset.
Helicopters are being used to fight a wildfire that has burned on moorland near Glossop, Derbyshire, since Wednesday evening.
Children have been banned from paddling pools during the heatwave, after an emergency hosepipe ban was imposed.
South East Water issued restrictions on homes across Kent, saying hosepipes should not be used for “watering gardens, washing cars, patios and boats and for filling swimming and paddling pools”.
Elsewhere, a 50-year-old swimmer died after a “medical emergency” off Aberavon, Wales, yesterday and a British woman died at a campsite in the coastal town of Tranche-sur-Mer, in France, after temperatures soared to 43.8C.
