Cooler conditions and a “moisture-laden” frontal system will bring serious rainfall to Metro Vancouver on Friday, giving us a dose of Augumn (yes, Augumn) weather.

According to a rainfall warning issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), parts of the region could see 50 mm of rain, with up to 80 mm of rain at higher terrains on Friday and Friday night.

So far, ECCC says the warning impacts Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, West Vancouver and North Vancouver. However, despite the warning only being issued for those cities, other Metro Vancouver cities will also be hit with rain.

As of 8:30 a.m., Burnaby and Vancouver were forecast to be hit with up to 30 mm of rain on Friday.

The rainfall warning is expected to hit at the most inopportune time, with ECCC suggesting it could start while folks are driving home from work on Friday.

“An unseasonably moisture-laden frontal system will cross the B.C. south coast on Friday, bringing heavy rain. The warm front arrives Friday morning with rain and strong southerly winds. The cold front arrives Friday afternoon and will bring the heaviest rainfall rates during the afternoon commute,” ECCC says.

ECCC is also warning of some hazards, including poor visibility in heavy rain, water pooling on roadways, which increases the risk of hydroplaning, and sudden rises in water levels in rivers and creeks.

ECCC predicts that the rain will stop after midnight across eastern Metro Vancouver.

For the rest of the week, the Vancouver forecast is looking pretty grey.
