Ruthin School is one of Britain’s oldest independent schools. It was first founded in 1284 and then re-founded in 1574 by Gabriel Goodman, Dean of Westminster.
In 1893 the school moved from the immediate vicinity of the church to a building designed by John Douglas on its site on the edge of the town.
Clwyd MS Darren Millar said: “I was very saddened to hear of the closure of Ruthin School, and my heart goes out to all the pupils, parents and staff affected.
“It has come as a real shock and families are now facing serious uncertainty about their children’s education , while staff are understandably worried about their future.
“The immediate priority must be ensuring that every pupil is supported and able to continue their education with as little disruption as possible. It is essential that there is clear communication and practical support to help families navigate the challenges ahead.
“It is also essential that staff affected by this closure are properly supported during this distressing time.”
The news follows the closure of St Gerard’s School in Bangor, which was announced in recent weeks.
They said recent changes – including the introduction of VAT on school fees, loss of charitable status, and rise in national insurance – meant that the school was no longer viable
MS Mr Millar added: “This is the second independent school closure in North Wales in recent weeks and while there will no doubt be several factors behind the closure, we cannot ignore the wider financial pressures facing independent schools as a result of Labour’s introduction of VAT on school fees, and nor can we ignore the economic impact on the communities in which they are located.”
Rydal Penrhos School, in Colwyn Bay, said: “We are aware of the announced closure of Ruthin School. Our thoughts and sympathies are with every family affected. Our priority is to support those affected by the news.”
Myddelton College, in Denbigh, said: “To Ruthin families: we are here for you. Myddelton College is offering a place and dedicated support to every Ruthin pupil from September.”
