A woman in Iran went for a walk in her underwear and was subsequently detained by the authorities for a short time.
Iran’s judiciary accuses her of a “breach of social norms,” the state news agency IRNA reported on Friday. The incident reportedly took place a few days previously in a park in the conservative desert city of Yazd.
According to IRNA, the woman has since been reunited with her family. The report mentioned a “serious mental illness.” The case is being treated as a high priority by the public prosecutor’s office, it was stated.
The exact circumstances of the woman’s detention are unclear.
A video purportedly showing the woman wearing purple underwear has been posted on social media. The authenticity of the footage could not initially be independently verified. The woman’s face and body contours were blurred to protect her identity.
Several other people are also reported to have been arrested, including those who shot the video.
A similar incident involving a female student occurred previously in the capital, Tehran. It was reported that she had undressed in protest against Iran’s strict Islamic dress codes.
Compliance with the dress code in Iran is monitored by the so-called Morality Police.
Many women in Iran’s major cities have been defying rules such as the compulsory wearing of the headscarf since the wave of protests that broke out in the Islamic Republic in 2022.
