Anthony Albanese’s decision to recognise Palestinian statehood had the unexpected consequence this week of exposing a split within Hamas and the murky world of communications within a terrorist group whose senior leadership have been killed, jailed or exiled across the Middle East.

On Wednesday the federal opposition and Jewish groups jumped on a statement by Sheikh Hassan Yousef – sent to a journalist from The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age and praising the “courage” of the prime minister’s decision – as a sign that Albanese and Labor had played into the hands of Hamas.
