NATALIA GOMEZ DEL CAMPO IS LIVE IN OUR STORM CHASER. YOU’VE BEEN TALKING TO NEIGHBORS WHOSE HOMES ARE STARTING TO FLOOD THIS MORNING. WHAT ARE THEY GOING THROUGH? YEAH THAT’S RIGHT. ALEX, WE SAW A LOT OF FLOODING AS WE WERE DRIVING INTO ELKHART. BUT THEN ONCE WE ACTUALLY PULLED INTO THIS NEIGHBORHOOD IN LINCOLN AVE, WE DID SEE A LOT OF FLOODING. AND YOU’RE RIGHT, WE DID SPEAK TO A NEIGHBOR. HE SAID HIS BASEMENT HAS FOUR FEET OF FLOODING. SO IT IS REALLY IMPACTING THE HOMES AROUND HERE. WE’RE SEEING OBVIOUSLY, SOME OF THE ROADS ARE FLOODED, BUT ALSO SOME OF THE FRONT LAWNS, AND CLEARLY IT IS AFFECTING SOME OF THE HOUSES. WE HAVEN’T SPOKEN TO ANY OTHER NEIGHBORS, BUT HE WAS UP AND DEALING WITH IT. SO IT IS DOING SOME SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO HOUSES. BUT WE’RE GOING TO KEEP SAYING HERE IN ELKHART, POTENTIALLY TALKING TO MORE PEOPLE OR JUST SEEING ALL THE FLOODING ALL AROUND THE NEIGHBORHOOD. ERIC ALEX. NATALIA, IT’S WITH ME WITH YOU THIS MORNING. AND WE’VE BEEN NOTICING ALL MORNING LONG IN YOUR REPORTING, THE FLOODING BETWEEN ANKENY AND ELKHART. AND THAT’S ALSO WHERE WE’RE SEEING THE INTERSTATE BLOCKED OFF NORTHBOUND 35. YOU CAN SEE THEM GETTING TRAFFIC OFF THE ROAD ONTO A DETOUR BETWEEN EXIT 92 102 BECAUSE OF FLOODING ON THE INTERSTATE. THIS IS A BIG IMPACT TO MORNING DRIVERS. ON THIS FRIDAY, A HOLIDAY LONG HOLIDAY WEEKEND FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE OUT OF WORK AND LOOKING TO ENJOY FESTIVITIES, THIS IS GOING TO IMPACT THE DRIVE NORTH OF ANKENY. IT WILL SLOW YOU DOWN AGAIN. Update, 8:45 a.m.: Iowa authorities have reopened Interstate 35 northbound after flooding Friday morning between Ankeny and Elkhart.Iowa DOT shut down northbound lanes of I-35 from Ankeny to Elkhart due to flooding. Parts of Ankeny and northern Polk County into southern Story County have seen 6 to 8 inches of rain. Some areas saw even more than that in less than 24 hours.Northbound traffic should take a detour west from I-35 on NE 36th Street in Ankeny, north on NE 14th Street/NE Ankeny Boulevard, then east on NE 126th back to I-35. Power outages are also being reported, which can lead to basement and home flooding. Rivers and creeks are expected to swell in Polk and Jasper counties. Parts of Fourmile Creek have hit flood stage and are expected to crest this morning around 9 a.m.Jackknifed semi-truck on I-80 westbound near WaukeeA jackknifed semi-truck is blocking the inside lane and shoulder of Interstate 80 westbound near Waukee.
