Two people have died after falling from the Western Distributor overpass onto Harbour Street below in Sydney’s CBD, police say.

The pair, a man and a woman who police believe to be in their 40s, died before the arrival of emergency services, police said.

Two southbound lanes of traffic on the Sydney Harbour Bridge are closed and traffic is being diverted to the Anzac Bridge.

Live Traffic is advising of changed traffic conditions due to a police operation on Harbour Street near the Western Distributor.

“Motorists can use Western Distributor off-ramp to Harris St, William Henry St and Pier St to access Harbour St and City South,” the traffic alert says.

The location of the incident includes overpasses and roads between the Harbour Bridge, the CBD and the Anzac Bridge, as well as the pedestrian overpass to the Pyrmont Bridge.

“Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command have established a crime scene and have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” a NSW Police spokesperson said.

“Police are urging anyone with information about the matter – or was in the area at the time with any available dashcam/mobile phone footage – to contact Day Street Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
