Tuchel will know that Rice will be desperate to start against Argentina and his vice-captain is unlikely to rule himself out. The expectation at this stage is that Rice will recover sufficiently to declare himself available, but Tuchel and England will take a daily approach to his condition and not push him unnecessarily.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford is confident England will keep their cool should Argentina attempt to get players sent off in Atlanta.
The clash at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium is a repeat of the 1998 last-16 fixture when David Beckham was famously sent off for kicking Diego Simeone.
Pickford: We let our football do the talking
Jude Bellingham has been targeted by some opponents during this tournament, but Pickford believes his team-mates will focus on their own game as they fight for a place in the final on Sunday.
“You’ve seen throughout the tournament, you’ve seen our desire to win tackles but we’ve not got into scuffles,” Pickford said.
“We just reset and go again and let our football do the talking. We’ve not had second yellow cards that we don’t get wrapped up in things like that and we stay together.”
Pickford’s opposite number, Emiliano Martínez, also has a reputation for using the dark arts in penalty shoot-outs. The two goalkeepers faced each other 11 years ago in the Championship when they were both on loan in the EFL.
“I’ll never forget playing against him when he was on loan at Wolves and I was at Preston North End,” Pickford said. “The pathway he went on, he had to wait for his chance. His antics are his antics but he’s a top goalkeeper and that is what top keepers do. It’s about putting gloves on and performing and I have to give him credit for that.”
