Despite Donald Trump’s claims to the contrary, the Iran conflict will not be solved militarily, an expert has said.
Osamah Khalil, the chairman of the International Relations Programme at Syracuse University, said that the war has served to worsen tourism, energy exports and trade while violence escalates.
He told The Telegraph: “Despite President Trump’s hyperbolic claims, there is no military solution to the conflict.
“The renewed bombing and naval blockade will not cause the Iranian government or military to collapse, nor will it force them to make concessions or surrender.
“Meanwhile, global energy supplies have not been restored to pre-war levels and the U.S.’s strategic reserves have decreased to historically low levels.
“Energy and petrochemical exports from the Arab Gulf states have collapsed, as has tourism, with direct implications for their respective economies and the broader region.
“This also has consequences for the US and Western Europe, where the Arab Gulf states recycle petrodollars through investments, trade, and real estate.
“Unless the US is willing to adhere to the memorandum of understanding, including restraining Israel in Lebanon, the escalating violence will have profound consequences for regional stability and the global economy through the rest of the year and into 2027.”
