US air strikes on Iran overnight hit a “peaceful” nuclear-power plant under construction, according to furious Tehran officials.
During an eighth consecutive day of strikes on the country, the US attacked the partially built Darkhovin nuclear facility in the southwest of the country, according to Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation — an assault that came the day after two American service members were reported killed, with a third still missing.
“An attack on a peaceful nuclear facility under international safeguards is a clear violation of international law,” the organisation raged on social media.
US and Iranian strikes extended into Sunday, with Washington saying it was punishing Tehran for the deaths of two US servicemen in Jordan, and Gulf states forced to fend off further attacks.
Israeli and Jordanian forces said they intercepted Iranian missiles near Aqaba and Eilat on Sunday, as Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain accused Tehran of widening its attacks to regional territory and civilian infrastructure. Iran had earlier said it targeted two US bases in Kuwait with drones in response to American strikes on its territory.
Iranian news agencies Fars and Tasnim reported US attacks on Sirik, a port located on the Strait of Hormuz in southern Iran.
Iran earlier struck infrastructure in the Gulf and threatened a “full-scale offensive” in retaliation for the seventh consecutive night of US strikes on the Islamic republic.
