Wildlife officials shared an update Tuesday on the condition of one of Big Bear’s beloved bald eagles, Jackie, after she was reportedly attacked by a pair of subadult bald eagles near Dana Point Park on Big Bear Lake’s north shore.

She was seen grounded and unable to fly and was rescued by wildlife experts on July 18.

Jackie suffered no broken bones or other serious injuries in the attack, wildlife experts told KTLA. However, officials are still conducting tests in order to determine if she’s OK to return home to her nest in the wild.

The Ojai Raptor Center in Ventura County, which is caring for the eagle, said that Jackie is anemic and has inflammation affecting her kidneys, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley, the nonprofit that operates the popular Big Bear bald eagle cam.

They’re still waiting on test results for any sign of lead, zinc and rodenticide levels.

The center is working with several specialist veterinarians to determine the best supportive care for the moment, FOBBV said.

“We loved hearing that Jackie has more energy this morning. She is mad and fighting the staff… That’s our Jackie, a strong and mighty eagle!” FOBBV said in its update.

Jackie is reportedly eating well with assistance and is even picking up food on her own. She is still standing up and perching.

Wildlife officials took X-rays and did not find any evidence of fishing hooks, sinkers or any other metal objects.

FOBBV said it will continue to give updates on her condition as soon as they get them.

Jackie and her mate, Shadow, became famous on FOBBV’s bald eagle cam. The couple, which has been together since 2018, is currently rearing a pair of eaglets named Sandy and Luna, who recently took their first flight.

Jackie and Shadow also successfully hatched and raised eaglets Sunny and Gizmo in 2025, the same year they suffered the loss of an eaglet during a storm. They also had two eggs destroyed by ravens in a 2026 nest attack.

The pair remains separated as Jackie recovers from her injuries and receives treatment at the Ojai Raptor Center.

Shadow continues to care for eaglets Sandy and Luna while protecting the nest and territory, FOBBV said.

The eagle couple has received an outpouring of support as Jackie recovers. The Ojai Raptor Center received thousands in donations from over 11,000 supporters to help fund her care.

“Thank you for your support, well wishes to Jackie and the entire eagle family,” FOBBV said.
