Police were called to Cowley Hill in Borehamwood on Saturday after a suspicious object was found
A number of residents had to be evacuated from their homes after a suspicious object was found in a town.
Police were called to Cowley Hill in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, at about 12:15 BST on Saturday.
Several roads were closed while the object was dealt with by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit.
Late in the evening, Hertfordshire Police said a controlled explosion was carried out and residents were allowed to return home. A cordon remains in place on Cowley Hill while investigations continue.
Hertsmere Borough Council set up a reception area for residents at 96 Shenley Road, a community centre in the area, during the incident.
A number of people on social media commented that they heard a number of loud bangs during the day.
