MetService says forecast snow that will top up southern skifields could also create treacherous driving conditions in some areas.
The forecaster has issued a range of road snow warnings for the South Island’s alpine passes as a late wintry blast works up the country.
MetService says rain in Southland and Otago this morning will spread northwards to Canterbury this afternoon. Snow is expected to about 400 metres in Southland and Otago tonight.
In the South, road snow warnings are in place for the Lindis Pass (State Highway 8), the Crown Range Road and the Milford Road (SH94).Â
Further north the warnings have been issued for Arthur’s, Porters and Lewis passes.
