Hello and welcome to this evening’s live blog, where we will bring you updates from Ashton as Bristol City and Michael Skubala continue their pre-season preparations against Premier League Newcastle United.
It has been just a couple of days since the Reds were last in action, with Saturday afternoon’s trip to Swindon Town an enjoyable one for the City faithful. Skubala’s side got their first win of pre-season as they beat Ian Holloway’s Robins 3-1 thanks to a Lorent Tolaj brace and a Jed Wallace strike.
For this evening’s opponents, the weekend brought their first friendly of the summer. Newcastle, without several first-team players through both injury and international commitments, came from behind to draw with Gateshead, avoiding what could have been an early upset.
While Skubala’s side take to the field against the Magpies this evening, another City squad will face National League side Forest Green Rovers at The New Lawn Stadium. After that, the Robins have just two more friendlies to come before the season truly gets up and running.
When these two sides last met, all the way back in February 2017, the points were shared in a 2-2 draw. That day, it was Aaron Wilbraham and David Cotterill who got on the scoresheet for Lee Johnson’s side.
