Kiwi expats have snapped up a trophy home in Lakes Hayes for $9.5 million, Bayleys agents Nick Newman and Sheryl Williams have revealed.
The listing agents for the four-bedroom luxury pad in the exclusive Bendemeer enclave said the buyers, who split their time between London and Dubai, made the purchase sight unseen.
Newman told OneRoof that the house had initially been under contract with an Auckland buyer, but when that deal fell through, the agents looked to the international market.

Newman said the buyers contacted the agents “out of the blue” and moved quickly. They had been keeping an eye on the Bendemeer property and others in the district for some time, but were waiting for the sale of their London property to settle before they acted.
He added: “That high-end market started to pick up in July and we were starting to see more $10m buyers in the market.”

Newman told OneRoof that his Bendemeer buyers planned to make some changes to the property “It is such a good house. The architects said it would cost around $12,000 a square metre to build today, and then you are looking at section costs of $3m or $4m.”
Records show the vendors bought the 1.49ha property in 2012 for $900,000 and engaged award-winning Queenstown architects Dravitzki Brown Architecture to design the house, which was completed in 2017.
The 600sqm house is a mix of local schist, Corten steel panels, oak floors, and cedar ceilings. It boasts two master bedroom suites, a butler’s kitchen, a media room, and an office, has shared access to Bendemeer’s tennis court and pavilion, and an RV of $11.03m.

The Bendemeer enclave is popular with high net worth buyers, with an eight-bedroom house selling at the end of last year for just over $12m. “Queenstown has become a bit of a summer destination, there is so much that you can do. It is popular with golfers, and this house borders the new Hogans Gully golf course that is being built by Sir John Davies,” Newman said.
Last month, Newman and Williams sold a brand-new stone and cedar three-bedroom home on a 500sqm section in Caernarvon Street, in Arrowtown, for $3.8m.
“It’s in the historic zone, it’s the most prestigious street, and it was a good price bracket. Obviously, there are more buyers at that level. The buyers bought it for inventory, as they are also building somewhere else,” he said.
The agents are also marketing a five-bedroom lifestyle estate at 144A Arrowtown-Lake Hayes Road.
The property, which sits on more than 4000sqm of landscaped grounds with sweeping views across the basin, is being sold by their Bayleys Auckland colleague, Heather Walton-Bycroft.
The five-bedroom house comes with a lift and spa, and is minutes from Amisfield Winery and Ayrburn. “Prices are still going up. A section across the road on the lake sold for $7m,” Newman said.
