The Long Lake wildfire in Annapolis County continues to burn out of control and grow in size.

Nova Scotia’s Department of Natural Resources provided an update Sunday night, saying the fire now covers approximately 1,977 hectares, or 20 square kilometres.

Officials say the fire has moved past Godfrey Lake, reached the intersection of Fairns and West Dalhousie roads, and is now at the southern edge of the Spectacle Lakes.

DNR says firefighting efforts have so far prevented any structural damage in the area.

At last report, 77 Nova Scotia DNR firefighters were on scene, along with 20 from Ontario, five from Prince Edward Island, and 120 local firefighters.

Four CL-802 skimmer aircraft from the Northwest Territories that had been assigned to the Long Lake fire were diverted Sunday to assist with a separate blaze in Digby County. They are expected to return to Long Lake this morning.

The wildfire has forced the evacuation of approximately 100 homes.
