MADISON, Wis. — Protesters tried to reestablish a barricade on Williamson and Baldwin streets in Madison. Police reestablished control by Wednesday morning.

In an update Wednesday morning, police said unrest in the area turned violent overnight. Protesters took over the intersection for several hours before moving to the intersection of East Washington Ave and Baldwin Street.
Police said protesters emptied dumpsters and trash cans in the intersection and set five fires in the middle of streets. The Madison Fire Department said three fires were set on Williamson Street and two were set on Baldwin Street.
The fires were set in metal dumpsters and a City-issued trash can.
The Williamson/Baldwin intersection was reclaimed by police after midnight. Police said officers did not use munitions or force to regain control. Six people have been arrested in connection with the protests since 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, bringing the total number of people arrested since Tuesday morning to 22.
This follows Madison police and other city agencies clearing an encampment Tuesday morning at the site where Corey Ruiz was shot and killed by a police officer.
Madison Police Department spokesperson Stephanie Fryer told News 3 Now that, at around 5 a.m. Tuesday, city officials entered the encampment at the intersection of Williamson and Baldwin streets with a bullhorn and asked people to gather their belongings and leave.
Fryer said that people in the encampment lit three fires, leading Madison Fire Department and police personnel to intervene. Some people grabbed candles from the memorial dedicated to Ruiz and threw them in the air, while others in the encampment tried to stop them.
