ETTRICK, Va. (WWBT) – There will be a heavier police presence at Virginia State University after five people were shot on campus overnight.
According to VSU Police, the shooting happened around 1:28 a.m. in the Quad Annexes near Boisseau Street and Third Avenue.
When officers arrived, they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds. All five victims were taken to nearby hospitals.
One victim is in critical condition. The other four victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The university issued this statement online shortly after the incident.
The university was placed on lockdown following the shooting. VSU Police Chief David Bragg announced around 8:20 a.m. that the lockdown had been lifted and normal access to campus could resume.
“Although the lockdown has been lifted, members of the VSU community are asked to remain mindful of the ongoing law enforcement activity and avoid the immediate area where investigators are processing the scene,” Bragg said.
VSU says the Chesterfield County Police Department is leading the investigation. VSU Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office are assisting.
Police say they are looking for multiple suspects. No additional information about the suspects has been released.
