An investigation has been launched into the death of a man at a childcare centre in a confrontation with police on the Sunshine Coast.

Emergency services were called to a disturbance at the centre about 6pm yesterday in Peregian Springs, south of Noosa.

Police found a 28-year-old man who had broken into the building and had serious injuries from self-harming.

Officers attempted to negotiate with the man before taking him into custody.

He became unresponsive soon after.

Police at the scene rendered first aid before other emergency services arrived, but he was declared dead a short time later.

No other person present at the time of the incident was physically harmed.

The death is under investigation by the Ethical Standards Command on behalf of the state coroner and is under independent oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
