An inspirational young Arranmore man has raised over €1,600 (and counting) for the RNLI by walking solo from his island home to Dun Laoghaire.

Taidhg Trocme, 18, set out on his 390km journey on the 5th of August and crossed the finish line yesterday.

Wild camping and conquering up to 60,000 steps a day, Taidhg braved the elements and the fatigue to raise as much as possible for a cause close to his heart.

Taidhg’s walk for RNLI

He said: “I decided to use this opportunity to fundraise for the RNLI as they are a core part of my local community and have a rich and proud history on the island. By leading search and rescue operations, doing medical evacuations and saving lives in all conditions, the lifeboat team (made up almost entirely of volunteers) show their courage and selflessness on an ongoing basis. Living surrounded by water, it’s plain to see the enormous impact the RNLI has on the lives and safety of all those around the Irish and UK coasts.”

As his journey came to an end at the RNLI station in Dun Laoghaire in Dublin, Taidhg wrote: “The Dun Laoghaire lifeboat team gave me such a warm welcome at the station, so thank you so much to all of them. It was a wonderful adventure but I’m glad it’s over, and I cannot wait to rest in my own bed.”

He thanked every person who supported him along the way: “Thank you so so much to everyone who donated and followed along, because of you we managed to reach 300% of the donation goal, raising just over 1,500€.”
