A Calgary police officer shot a man on Monday in the city’s southwest Yorkville neighbourhood, resulting in injuries that required the victim to be transported to the hospital.

Just before 1 p.m. on Monday, police were called to the 300 block of Yorkville Road S.W. for a 911 hang-up call. Police said they believed the call was connected to a domestic incident involving a weapon inside of a home.

A man fled the residence before police arrived, and police said they found the man a short distance away near 194th Avenue and Sheriff King Street S.W. The Calgary Police Service said a confrontation with the man resulted in officers using a variety of what they called use-of-force tools.

The actions police took included one officer shooting the man. The victim was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, a provincial watchdog that investigates incidents where death or serious injury were caused by police, is now investigating the shooting. Police added that one officer was assessed by EMS at the scene with no physical injuries reported, and that no members of the public were injured in the shooting.
