A thawing Swiss glacier has given up the bodies of two Belgian climbers who vanished more than three decades ago. Police in the canton of Valais on Wednesday said a hiker spotted the remains on July 26 on the Trift Glacier, near the Italian border. DNA testing confirmed the bodies are those of two men, then 39 and 41, who disappeared in the Weissmies region in 1992. Euronews reports they left the Weissmies hut on Sept. 4 of that year to summit the 13,000-foot Weissmies but didn’t manage to do so due to bad weather. Searches for the men turned up only a backpack.
CBS News reports authorities there keep a missing-persons list stretching back to 1925, and that the remains of a man who disappeared on a glacier in the same area in 1994 were found last year.
