Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after a police officer shot a man while responding to a call in southwest Calgary on Monday afternoon.
Calgary police say they received a 911 hang-up call from a home on Yorkville Road SW in the community of Yorkville around 1 p.m. Officers responded to reports of a domestic incident involving a weapon.
Police say a man left the home before they arrived. Responding officers found the man nearby at 194 Avenue and Sheriff King Street SW.
“This resulted in multiple officers using a variety of use-of-force tools to diffuse the situation as best they could,” says CPS Deputy Chief Cliff O’Brien, adding that one officer fired their gun at the man.
The man was rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. An officer was also assessed by paramedics at the scene, but no further injuries were reported.
“Clearly, there were other people from the community who may have witnessed something, and we would certainly encourage those people to come forward,” says O’Brien.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is taking over the investigating. ASIRT investigates any incidents involving police that end in serious injury or death.
