SAN ANTONIO – Texas House Democrats are alleging that one representative is being held as a political prisoner on the state House floor.

On Monday, the Texas House Democratic Caucus announced that State Representative Nicole Collier (D-Fort Worth) is “currently being detained on the floor of the Texas House of Representatives.”

This comes after the representative allegedly refused to sign a “permission slip” that would assign a law enforcement detail to her, which would ensure her return to the legislature for the upcoming special session.

“My constituents sent me to Austin to protect their voices and rights,” said Rep. Nicole Collier. “I refuse to sign away my dignity as a duly elected representative just so Republicans can control my movements and monitor me with police escorts. My community is majority-minority, and they expect me to stand up for their representation. When I press that button to vote, I know these maps will harm my constituents — I won’t just go along quietly with their intimidation or their discrimination.”

It remains unclear as to if she is being prevented from leaving the house floor until she approves the law enforcement escort, or otherwise. We have yet to hear from Republican organizers or the Governor’s office on the matter.

This comes after both Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton have threatened to issue arrest warrants for Texas democrats after they left the state for two weeks amid a special session and a controversial vote to approve new voting districts in the state.
