With the return of the Premier League in recent days, we have also been treated to one of the more enjoyable segments that kicks off each campaign.

We are of course talking about the season predictions on Monday Night Football, where Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville give us their takes on what is about to unfold over the coming months.

While those suggestions often look rather ridiculous come the end of the campaign, Neville immediately set himself up for failure with some of his takes about his former club.

Gary Neville’s Premier League Predictions Were Like A Parody Of Himself

When it comes to their prospects for this season, it’s fair to say that not many football fans are expecting much from Manchester United.

They come into this campaign on the back of a horror season last time, finishing 15th in the league. While they did some decent business in the transfer market up to this point, there also remains some glaring holes in their team.

Apparently, nobody told this to Gary Neville.

Appearing on Monday Night Football, he was told that a survey of Manchester United fans revealed that just 13 per cent of them expected the team to finish in the top four this season.

I can’t disappoint you. I’ve got to come back here in ten months and try to defend this.

We’ve worked out before that we have done this for eight years and I’ve always had Manchester United in the top four every year.

Of course.

Gary Neville remains an optimist when it comes to Manchester United, even if they do seem to let him down most of the time. He famously predicted that they would finish ahead of Liverpool last season, only to actually be 14 league places behind them come the end of the season.

On this occasion, he once again picked a Manchester United coach as his ‘manager to watch’, leading to some gentle ribbing from his fellow pundit.

“Why you laughing? It’s disrespect” 😡
“You pick a Man Utd manager every year on that” 😂@GNev2 was not happy with @Carra23‘s reaction to his Manager to Watch selection 😅 pic.twitter.com/RMAiMkKEuq

Neville: Why are you laughing? It’s disrespectful.

Carragher: You pick the United manager every year.

Neville: I don’t pick him every year. The reason last year was similar to this. [Erik] ten Hag last year because if he started badly he would be under massive pressure.

Similarly, there is probably going to be no in between. If Ruben Amorim starts off badly and they’re in 13th of 14th in October or November, he will be under massive pressure. He’s the Manchester United manager and he has to deliver.

I think he will outperform.

Carragher: Outperform what, you’ve got them fourth?

Neville: I know you’re not sure about him, you sort of wrote your article the other day saying he’s not that good.

Jamie Carragher continues to be baffled by Gary Neville’s belief in Manchester United each season, with this year being no exception.

It seems that Neville has based his confidence on the team entirely on their decent (albeit losing) performance against Arsenal on Sunday, something the former Liverpool player was baffled by.

Neville: When you saw Cunha play, Mbuemo play, you saw Mount play, Shaw at left centre back, all of a sudden there’s a balance.

Casemiro looks like a better player all of a sudden, straight away he looked like a better player. Dorgu looks like he is doing that up and down on the left.

Carragher: It is one game! It was one game. Oh my god!

Neville: I’ve been asked to make a prediction.

Carragher: I know, but what I’m saying is it was one game.

Neville: But it was against Arsenal who are one of the best teams in the league.

Carragher: Arsenal had a stinker. I know you played well, it was one game!

In other areas, Neville also picked Arsenal to win the Premier League for the third year on the spin and suggested that heavy favourites Liverpool would drop to third.

Time will tell just how mad these predictions turn out to be.
