Asked if any injuries or fatalities resulted from the shooting, Constable Anthony Colangeli, Media Relations Officer for Kingston Police, said he could not provide further details as the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been contacted.

The SIU is a provincial police watchdog that invokes its mandate to investigate police-involved incidents that lead to injuries or death, involve the use of a firearm, or involve other alleged criminal activities (such as sexual assault).

Kingstonist has reached out to the SIU for confirmation of their investigation and further details.

Kingston Fire and Rescue and Frontenac Paramedics also attended the scene, though Kingstonist has not yet been able to confirm whether anyone was transported to hospital by paramedics.

UPDATE (Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2026, at 5:10 p.m.)

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has now released further details on the police-involved shooting that occurred this morning.

In a press release issued just before 5 p.m., the provincial police watchdog organization said that a 28-year-old civilian sustained “serious injuries” from the incident, which occurred around 9:40 a.m. As previously reported, the injured person was a male, as per Frontenac Paramedics (see above).

According to the SIU, Kingston Police received a 911 call from a man who was in distress at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2026.

“Offices were dispatched to the Waaban Crossing bridge, where they encountered the man,” the SIU stated.

“There was an interaction, and two officers discharged their firearms. The man was struck multiple times.”

What prompted the use of firearms was not disclosed in the release; however, the SIU did say that the male who was taken to hospital also had a firearm.

According to the SIU, their agency has assigned four investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.

“From the scene, SIU investigators collected two firearms belonging to the two officers, as well as a firearm belonging to the male,” they said.

Anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, is asked to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529 or online at http://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.

Witnesses to the incident can fill out a ‘Witness Assistance Form’ on the SIU’s website.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (including municipal, regional, and provincial police officers) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.

Anyone who feels they have been negatively affected by an incident under SIU investigation can contact the Affected Persons Program for support, according to the SIU. The Affected Persons Program can be reached at 1-877-641-1897, and support is free, confidential, and available 24/7, the provincial agency stated.
