A man whose “erratic” behaviour, including a break-in and assault, prompted several 911 calls in east Winnipeg early Sunday died in hospital after he was Tasered by officers during his arrest.
Winnipeg police say officers responded at 4:23 a.m. Sunday to several 911 calls that were made to check on the well-being of a man on McMeans Avenue E., near Redonda Street in the Transcona area, police said in a Monday news release.
The man was reportedly “walking up and down the street in an erratic manner” while removing his clothing, police said.
One of the calls to 911 came from the man himself and a woman, who said they were experiencing “adverse effects” after consuming drugs, according to police.
At 4:31 a.m., a nearby resident called 911 to report that a man had broken into his home and assaulted him, before the intruder eventually left.
Patrol officers in the area found the man naked. He refused to comply with their orders and ran away, according to police. They chased him and used a Taser on the man during a “use of force encounter” before taking him into custody, police said.
An ambulance was called after the man showed signs of an “agitated chaotic event,” during which he became unresponsive, the police news release said. Officers gave him CPR until paramedics arrived.
The 42-year-old man was taken to hospital in critical condition, and was pronounced dead there.
One officer sustained a minor injury to their leg during the encounter with the man, police said.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba, which investigates all serious matters involving police, has taken over the investigation into the man’s death, the Monday news release said.
