The body of a Co Donegal man who was reported missing in a busy Portugal holiday resort town has been recovered, his family has confirmed.
Mark Kiely, who was from Donegal Town and understood to be in his thirties, was visiting Albufeira, and was last seen alive in the popular Algarve resort’s Old Town area in the early hours of Saturday.
A police report stated he was “last seen wearing cream shorts and a light green polo shirt”, adding: “Any information at all please get in contact ASAP.”
Family members travelled to Portugal as the search for him continued.
However, in a post to social media, a family spokesperson said confirmed the news of Mr Kiely’s death.
“We have found Mark, but unfortunately not the outcome we had been hoping for,” they said.
“Huge thanks to all our friends and family for support and help in trying to find him. May Mark rest in peace.”
Among those to pay tribute to Mark under the update post was Adeline McBrearty, who wrote: “This is such sad news, just awful, poor Mark, he was such a gentleman! My thoughts and prayers to his friends and family.”
Cora O’Connell said: “Heartbreaking, another young life gone too soon. May his gentle soul rest in peace.”
News website The Portugal Resident reported Mr Keily’s body was found close to Albufeira fishing port.
The tragedy follows the deaths of three Irish men in Portugal in separate incidents over recent years.
In May, 22-year-old Dylan McCahey, from Co Monaghan, drowned in an incident in a swimming pool while on holiday in the country.
Last September, 29-year-old Ryan Chan, from Letterkenny in Co Donegal, was found deceased in a police cell in Albufiera, after being arrested in connection with an alleged knife attack on his partner.
Portugal’s National Republican Guard said they believed he had taken his own life and an investigation was launched.
In April of last year, a 52-year-old man Irishman drowned at Albufiera’s Inatel beach after getting into difficulties while swimming.
