Horrifying details of how the murder of a 2-year-old child inside a Frankfort home unfolded are coming to light just days after the tragic scene was discovered by a neighbor, who also found the child’s mother attempting to harm herself inside, court documents show.

The situation has been the source of plenty of speculation and headlines after the quiet suburban neighborhood was rocked by news that a young child was killed, allegedly at the hands of his 40-year-old mom, inside a home with at least three other kids.

Corie A. Walsh was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and is now in custody “and being held for medical treatment.”

Walsh was found inside her home Tuesday afternoon attempting to harm herself as police said they discovered her 2-year-old child unresponsive. The child later died at an area hospital and Walsh was transported for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Court documents later revealed Friday the horror police say they uncovered.

Neighbor called 911 after finding 2-year-old child unresponsive, police say

In a petition seeking to keep Walsh from being released pretrial, prosecutors said police were called to the 22700 block of Brook Stone Court in Frankfort for a report of “an injured 2-year-old child.”

“When officers arrived, a neighbor was performing CPR on a toddler, later identified as two-year-old Barrett Walsh, born March 26, 2024,” the documents stated.

The neighbor told authorities she found Barrett, also known as “Bear,” hanging from a rafter in the basement. He had a ligature around his neck and his feet were off the ground, prosecutors said.

“She removed the ligature, lowered the child to the ground, and attempted CPR while calling 911. According to the neighbor, Barrett was cold and had no pulse,” the documents read.

The child was pronounced dead that same day and autopsy results found he died of “asphyxia due to ligature compression of the neck,” the documents show, though police said a final cause and manner of death were still pending.

Prosecutors reported an infant was also inside the home at the time and two school-aged children had returned home around the time the child was discovered. All three remained unharmed.

Walsh’s husband, who lives at the home, was out of state at the time of the incident.

Mother discovered in bloody bath water, court docs show

While officers were at the scene, they were “directed to an upstairs bathroom located in the master bedroom,” the documents state, “reportedly due to this defendant, the mother of the victim, attempting to harm herself.”

There, Walsh was found lying in a tub, “fully dressed, surrounded by bloody water,” prosecutors said.

At the time officers arrived, they found the neighbor holding a towel on Walsh’s left inner thigh, and Walsh had cuts on her wrists and thighs.

The neighbor later told police Walsh asked why she was taking the knife. Walsh said she was trying to kill herself and that ‘Bear’ was in the basement, the neighbor told police.

Mother told police her son was the ‘devil,’ prosecutors say

According to court documents, Walsh told officers she “did this to her baby because he was the ‘devil’ and the ‘anti-Christ.'”

She later admitted in the hospital how she killed Barrett, officials said.

Police said Walsh’s admission aligned with what was discovered inside the home.

Mother had ‘become very invested’ in Lindsay Clancy murder trial,’ court docs state

Citing witnesses, prosecutors said Walsh had “recently become very invested in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial,” which involved a mother killing her three children before trying to kill herself.

The trial has generated intense interest for more than a month, deeply dividing the public and drawing attention to issues around maternal mental health after childbirth.

Clancy’s attorney said she was suffering from a rare condition called postpartum psychosis. Prosecutors conceded that Clancy had severe mental illness, but insisted she was able to understand and control her actions.

According to the court documents, Walsh “had been actively discussing the case via group text message with her friends” up until just hours before the tragic discovery was made inside her home.

Police said a forensic analysis of Walsh’s phone was being conducted.

An investigation into the case remained ongoing Friday.

Police call situation a ‘heartbreaking tragedy’

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, their loved ones, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy,” Frankfort Police Chief Leanne Chelepis said in a release. “We ask our community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers and to respect their privacy as they navigate this profoundly difficult time.”

Frankfort Mayor Keith Ogle said he learned of the situation from a call from the city’s police chief.

“Everybody was in shock, and this is just a horrible thing in the community. I’m a father with two daughters who just had babies recently, and it’s very difficult for everybody here,” he told NBC Chicago.

Ogle acknowledged while the circumstances are “very difficult for the community,” he urged residents to withhold judgment until the facts of the case are released.

“I don’t want people to draw conclusions out of school on this,” he said. “Let the investigators get the information, get the facts. They’ll interview neighbors, other people that are involved, and we’ll get a complete picture, or as best as we can.”

Frankfort is approximately 36 miles south of Chicago.
