Two-time Oscar nominee and Emmy Award-winning actor John Malkovich is scheduled to return to Israel on April 13 to star in the satirical theatrical-musical production The Music Critic at the Charles Bronfman Auditorium (Heichal Hatarbut) in Tel Aviv.
The Music Critic – written and conceived by Russian-German Jewish violinist and composer Aleksey Igudesman – blends classical masterpieces with some of the most scathing historical reviews ever written about them.
On stage, Malkovich embodies an “evil critic” who insults iconic composers, declaring that Robert Schumann merely “fancies himself a composer,” Johannes Brahms is a “giftless bastard,” and the works of Ludwig van Beethoven and Frédéric Chopin are simply tedious.
A live ensemble, featuring Igudesman and pianist Hyung-ki Joo, fights back against Malkovich’s verbal assaults by performing live renditions of the disputed music by Bach, Mozart, Debussy, and Prokofiev.

The performance culminates in a grand finale titled “The Malkovich Torment,” where the actor reads a real, brutally harsh critique written about his own career.
The show has previously toured extensively across Europe and the United States and has been released as an official album.
The announcement comes at a rare time for international bookings in the country, which have faced widespread disruptions and cultural boycotts amid the ongoing regional conflict.
In a statement regarding his upcoming tour, Malkovich shared his excitement about returning to the region:

Israeli producer Alon Yuryk expressed optimism that the booking would signal a broader return for major global performers.
“It is deeply moving to see Malkovich’s heartwarming responsiveness to performing here,” Yuryk said. “I view this as a trust-building step toward reviving major international performances in Israel.”
Malkovich’s third time back since being guest of honor at the 2008 Jerusalem Film Festival
The April 2027 performance will mark Malkovich’s third professional visit to Israel. He first visited the country in July 2008 as a guest of honor at the Jerusalem Film Festival. He returned for his first stage performance in April 2013, headlining the musical drama The Infernal Comedy: Confessions of a Serial Killer, at the Eilat International Chamber Music Festival and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
The 72-year-old actor remains best known for his acclaimed screen roles in Places in the Heart, In the Line of Fire, Dangerous Liaisons, Con Air, and Being John Malkovich.
When asked in a 2020 interview with Walla which characters align most closely with his actual personality, Malkovich remarked that he shares very little in common with the serious or intellectual archetypes he usually plays.
He suggested that his roles in Of Mice and Men or the borderline-clownish showman in The Great Buck Howard felt closer to his true nature.
“In real life, I’m not a serious person,” he said.
