SEATTLE — Interim Seattle Police Chief Andre Sayles is expected to give an update on several deadly weekend shootings in the city’s Belltown neighborhood.
Sayles spoke to media at 1:30 p.m.
It was a notably violent Labor Day weekend in the city, with three victims killed and four others wounded in three shootings between Sunday and Monday.
Sunday at 12:40 a.m. | 3rd Avenue and Clay Street
Just after midnight Sunday, street racers took over the area directly south of the Space Needle and were doing donuts in the street. Witnesses reported calling 911 after dozens of cars and around 100 spectators were involved in sideshow takeovers of the area. During that time, police said there was a fight involving multiple people when shots were fired.
In total, four people were shot. Two were taken to Harborview Medical Center by ambulance, while two others – a man and a woman – showed up at the hospital later with gunshot wounds. No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
Sunday at 2:00 a.m. | 3rd Avenue and Blanchard Street
While police were investigating the earlier shooting, 911 callers reported another shooting a few blocks to the south in Belltown.
A woman was found dead in a car with gunshot wounds to her head and torso, according to police. Paramedics transported the woman to the hospital, but she died from her injuries.
Police said the woman was sitting in the car when someone fired several shots into it. Police have not announced any arrests in connection with the shooting.
Monday at 12:30 a.m. | Elliot Avenue and Bell Street
911 callers raced to a report of a shooting early Monday at the intersection of Elliott Avenue and Bell Street. A 17-year-old male was killed, and a 21-year-old man was taken to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition.
Investigators said there was a fight that preceded the shooting. The shooting happened at the entrance to a pedestrian bridge leading to Pier 66.
“This is a constant battleground,” neighbor Kelly Brown told KOMO News. “I heard multiple gunshots. I looked down; they were on top of their friend, and you could tell when you walked up, he was just sheet white.”
No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting either.
On Monday afternoon, Seattle police activated a website for people to upload video evidence related the shooting near the Space Needle during the street takeover.
