OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – A man wanted on a felony warrant is dead after a standoff with police Sunday night in a West Omaha neighborhood near 145th and Shirley streets.
Police said officers first saw the man near 30th and Cuming streets around 7 p.m. He had an outstanding felony warrant. When the man noticed officers, he began driving erratically, and officers held off on a traffic stop, according to police.
On Monday, police identified the man as Daniel Read, 44.
Police called in a helicopter to keep track of the vehicle. ABLE-1 followed Read to the 145th and Shirley area, where Read left the car and broke into a nearby home, police said.
A woman inside the home told police Read pointed a gun at her before she got out safely. Police said they believe Read was alone inside the house after that.
SWAT team, negotiators respond
Officers surrounded the home, deploying a SWAT team and crisis negotiators. Flash bangs were used and commands were shouted at the house during the hours-long standoff, according to police.
Police said negotiators exchanged text messages with Read for roughly three hours.
Suspect found dead inside home
Officers reported hearing several gunshots from inside the house as the text exchange ended. A police drone was sent in to check the house, and officers located Read dead inside, police said. Investigators said the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.
Police said no officers fired their weapons and no one else was hurt.
Because Read died while in police custody, the case will go before a grand jury, as required under state law. Police said the investigation remains open.
