The crowds are gone, the vendors are packed up, and the cows have come home. The 2026 Minnesota State Fair is over, and we must now wait 352 days to do it all over again.

So now one question remains: How many people showed up this year?

Officially, 1,923,325 souls passed through the fairground gates in 2026, a decline of 17,544 from 2025.

This year’s attendance figure is consistent with the median of 1,933,387 dating back to 2017. The first year-over-year drop since 2021 means the fair has now gone six consecutive years without cracking 2 million, a mark met only twice, in 2018 and 2019.

Now, let’s overanalyze it.

The fair got off to a hot start, with new attendance records set in the first two days, including a stunning 204,065 on the first Friday — just the third weekday in fair history to surpass 200,000.

Overall attendance lagged from there when compared to recent trends.

Attendance figures on Days 5 through 9 saw a marked decline from the past decade, with 71,099 fewer visitors over the full workweek — 14,220 per day — compared to the median total since 2017.

Part of that shift could be attributed to a few dozen school districts beginning class the week before Labor Day.

The Legislature passed a temporary exemption and allowed schools to start as early as Sept. 1 due to Labor Day falling on its latest possible date in 2026. The option for schools to start early will remain in place next year.

Weekends — typically the highest highs for fair attendance — were in line with trends set since the pandemic. Overall weekend attendance was 1.6% higher than the average from 2022-25.

For those who take stock in attendance records and despair at that 2019 high-water mark slipping farther into the rearview, here’s a slice of perspective on a stick: Iowa’s state fair, in raw human terms, doesn’t come close to Minnesota’s.

In 2026, the Iowa State Fair brought in 1,218,834 visitors over 11 days, an all-time record for our friends to the south. That’s still 20,000 short of what the pandemic-challenged 2021 Minnesota State Fair drew over its final 11 days.

And while it’s true the Minnesota State Fair didn’t hit 2 million this year, it took Texas — a state with five times the population of Minnesota — a full 24 days to hit that mark in 2025.

Just imagine what Minnesota can do in half the time next year.
