Manchester United are seemingly moving ever closer to giving Ruben Amorim what he wants this summer – but there is still plenty of work to do.
United always knew that this summer would need major work being undertaken on the squad. So far, that work has seen only the additions of Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon, with the deal for the latter being agreed earlier in the year.
Bryan Mbeumo appears to be closing in on a move to United after a £70million deal with Brentford was agreed this week. And it seems this week will not be the end of the deals, with another concerning a potential outgoing.
It has been widely reported that Marcus Rashford could complete a loan move to Barcelona with the La Liga outfit ready to agree a deal with United. Should a move be completed, it could also include an option-to-buy clause for next summer.
Rashford has been linked with Barcelona for some time, and such a deal would not be a shock to those connected with United. And many will also know that this may just be the start of what is to come.
Further outgoings are expected to take place at United this summer. Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia are all being tipped to leave Old Trafford on permanent deals, but nothing is close to being agreed with any clubs at this stage.
If United can bring in fees for each of the four aforementioned players, it would hand a major boost to Amorim as he looks to get his squad ready for the start of the new campaign.
It’s uncertain what exact funds United would be able to generate from selling Garnacho, Antony, Malacia and Sancho, but the money off the wage bill would also be a major boost. Rashford’s departure could also help United manage their wages for the season ahead.
United have September 1 to complete their transfer business so still have plenty of time to get the exits over the line. But they will have to be mindful of time, because once those four players do leave then they would need to go into the market for further reinforcements.
After signing Cunha and Mbeumo, United could look to target a striker and a midfielder. Whether United would need to wait for further departures to complete those deals remains to be seen, but it would certainly give Amorim and Co. room to work with in the transfer market if they were to get over the line.
