Congregation Adath Israel is proud to announce a transformative new era for its community, marked by structural modernization and a deliberate shift away from its purely Conservative movement affiliation.

Embracing an inclusive, accessible, and contemporary approach to spiritual life, the congregation invites local families and individuals to be part of the change, reconnect with their roots, and continue cherished traditions in a community tailored for today’s world.

As part of this exciting transition, Adath Israel is introducing a dynamic leadership team to guide the community forward. For the upcoming High Holidays, the synagogue will welcome Rabbi Eytan Kenter, a vibrant spiritual leader renowned for creating modern, deeply resonant holiday experiences. Following the holidays, Rabbi Rona Shapiro will lead the congregation into this new era. Shapiro’s unique superpower is her ability to make Jewish teachings, values, and traditions completely relevant, engaging, and meaningful to contemporary everyday life.

Rabbi Barukh Schectman, who has led Adath Israel for more than a decade, will transition into the role of Rabbi Emeritus.

A spokesperson for Congregation Adath Israel says the historic community on Huntingtown Road is entering an intentional, modern chapter that honors its rich history while opening doors wider than ever before.

The synagogue’s evolving model emphasizes low barriers to entry and local community building. Neighbors who are discovering Judaism for the first time, or those looking to rediscover a sense of belonging close to home, are invited to experience this fresh chapter firsthand.

Upcoming fall programming includes:

*High Holiday Services led by Rabbi Kenter. Non-members are warmly welcome to attend, though advance registration is required.

In keeping with the synagogue’s commitment to the next generation, all youth ages 24 and under attend for free.

*Sunday School, which is currently enrolling pre-K through grade four. Classes focus on warmth, joy, and tradition, beginning Sunday, September 27.
