Trump told Fox News on Thursday stateside that he holds no regrets about his decision to attack Iran. “If I had it to do again, I would do exactly what I did,” he said. The host pressed Trump on the political cost, telling him he would otherwise be “cruising to midterms victory right now.” Trump rejected that framing.
He argued that without action, Iran would have acquired a nuclear weapon and used it. According to Trump, the Islamic Republic would “wipe out” Israel and the Middle East before striking US cities. Trump’s remarks land as markets prepare for the Iran war to stretch further. A recent report revealed that top White House advisors have discussed with Trump the prospect that fighting could continue past his current term.
However, the president has speculated that the war will finish immediately after the midterm elections, with oil and gas prices dropping soon after. He claimed Iran wants his party to lose in the upcoming midterm elections. Critics note he has made similar predictions for months.
The administration is working to cut Iran off from its economic network. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced sanctions against “a large bank” next week. “We’re going to do it on Monday because we want to honor the memory of our fallen citizens on 9/11. But watch this space on Monday,” Bessent said (via CNBC).
He further added that the administration had sanctioned the Dubai branches of Egypt’s second-largest bank, accusing it of giving Iran $1.8 billion. It also sanctioned the “largest Turkish bank” for similar activity, though Bessent did not identify it.
