The news photographs made on Sept. 11, 2001, are still instantly recognizable, and still shocking, 25 years later.

What is harder to summon from this distance is the pulsating chaos of that day, hour by hour. The disbelief at billowing black smoke from a gash in the Pentagon and collapsing skyscrapers of steel, the dread over what attacks might yet come, the hope that people might be pulled from the rubble alive. No one knew the death toll that day; it grew to nearly 3,000. The wars after killed millions.
