Israeli forces shot and injured a Palestinian man Saturday in occupied East Jerusalem, according to the Jerusalem Governorate.

The man sustained moderate injuries after being shot in the Ras al-Amud neighborhood of Silwan, south of the flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque, it said.

The shooting came as Jewish holidays began, a period that often sees increased Israeli incursions into Al-Aqsa and attacks on Palestinians in Jerusalem.

On Friday, the governorate warned of growing calls by Israeli groups to impose Jewish religious rituals inside Al-Aqsa during the holidays.

Al-Aqsa Mosque is the world’s third-holiest site for Muslims. Jews call the area the Temple Mount, claiming it was the site of two ancient Jewish temples.

Israeli forces have intensified operations in the occupied West Bank since Oct. 8, 2023, when it began a genocidal war against the Gaza Strip. The operations include occupied East Jerusalem, with reports of killings, arrests, forced displacement, home demolitions, and settlement expansion.
