Senate set to reconvene Monday, but Mitch McConnell’s return remains unclear
Longtime Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell’s return to Capitol Hill remains uncertain as he continues to recover from a fall in June.
McConnell, 84, was hospitalized in June after a fall and a bout with pneumonia shortly after. He was later moved to a rehabilitation center to continue his recovery, before returning home last month.
McConnell’s communications staff has said the 84-year-old is remaining engaged with Senate business as he continues to recover.
Kentucky Congressman James Comer said earlier this month he expects McConnell to be back soon. However, McConnell’s team has not provided a concrete timeline for his return.
McConnell has a history of health problems.
He had polio in his early childhood and has long acknowledged some difficulty as an adult in walking and climbing stairs.
He was hospitalized with a concussion in March 2023 and missed several weeks of work after falling in a Washington hotel. He twice froze up during news conferences after he returned, staring vacantly ahead before colleagues and staff. A year later, he fell and sprained his wrist while walking out of a GOP luncheon.
