Long-serving Killybegs Coast Guard volunteer Michelle Bennett-Adair has travelled to Sydney to represent local lifesavers in a unique training programme.
Ardara native Michelle, who has given 13 years of service to the Coast Guard, is joined by Denise Jeffers from Westport as they represent the Irish Coast Guard in the International Maritime Rescue Federation’s #WomenInSAR training programme.
Women make up just 2% of the world’s 1.2 million seafarers, and representation in maritime search and rescue is even lower. This global initiative aims to change that by empowering women through leadership training, practical rescue exercises, and shared experiences on SAR vessels.
Michelle and Denise set off for Sydney yesterday. More information on their activities will be shared by the Irish Coast Guard on social media.
