Editor Richard Eden has criticized the monarchy’s handling of Earl Spencer’s allegations, arguing that the timing was wrong and that a public statement was unnecessary.

In its response, Buckingham Palace suggested that Spencer’s recollection was shaped by the grief and emotions surrounding Diana’s death rather than by clear reflection.

The statement partly read: “His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.”

Eden expressed frustration and anger over the statement and believes it was unwarranted. “I think it was a terribly misguided thing to do – to respond so quickly in this way,” Eden told The Daily Mail.

Part of his criticism comes from the royal family’s silence following the release of Prince Harry’s memoir, which contained several sensitive revelations about some members.

However, now that a book has criticized the king for something he said 30 years ago, the palace moved quickly. “I think it’s a terrible mistake,” Eden added. Royal editor Rebecca English said she remained undecided on whether the leadership had made the correct call.

Eden’s remarks and the leadership statement followed the publication of glimpses from the 9th Earl’s memoir, which partly details the aftermath of his sister’s death.

As The Blast reported, in the book titled “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister,” Spencer describes the King’s reaction to the news, comparing it to someone who had just won the lottery.

Spencer recalled Charles telling him, “Rest assured, we’ll forget her soon enough,” a remark that left him stunned. He also told him that he had personally broken the news to his sons, going to their rooms to tell them what had happened.

However, Spencer said something about the way Charles recounted the moment left him uneasy, as he felt the delivery seemed oddly casual for news that serious.

Spencer Wrote The Memoir To Tell The Late Princess’ Truth

With these alleged details now coming to light, Spencer has shared why he chose to speak up after years of silence.

Per The Blast, the Earl explained that he was motivated to offer his own insight into Diana’s life following numerous interview requests from the media over the years.

He, however, has one goal in mind, and that is to share Diana’s story from the perspective of her brother. “I want to tell the truth about Diana, just as I tried to do when I spoke at her funeral,” he said in a press release, The Blast reported.

He added that he hopes the book resonates with those who still hold the deceased close in their hearts, and also with younger generations who never knew her in her prime.

Prince Harry Reportedly Knew Of The Allegations

While the memoir’s allegations have caught much of the royal world off guard, one royal family member was reportedly familiar with its contents before publication.

As The Blast reported, sources claim Prince Harry discussed the project with his uncle during a July visit to Althorp.

The Duke of Sussex, joined by Meghan Markle and their children, Archie and Lilibet, visited the Spencer family estate to pay respects at Diana’s burial site.

Given Harry’s close ties to his mother’s family, sources believe Spencer likely made him aware of his plans to revisit that painful chapter during the visit.

As Spencer’s allegations make headlines, his own life and relationship with his dead sister have come under scrutiny.

The Blast reported that critics have accused him of hypocrisy, arguing that he should not criticize Charles’ treatment of Diana during their marriage given the controversies surrounding his own relationships.

The backlash also revisited old reports about Spencer and Diana’s bond. Some social media users even recalled reports that he turned his sister away from Althorp when she needed a home after her divorce.
