Three people, including a child, were killed in a crash early Saturday morning on I-85 in Granville County.
The crash happened around 4 a.m. near the Durham County line.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol said a Toyota Highlander was traveling north when it failed to slow down and struck a Providence Fire Department truck blocking an earlier crash scene.
The impact pushed the fire truck and Highlander into a nearby pickup truck.
A family of four from Charlotte was inside the Highlander.
Troopers identified the victims as 31-year-old Jason Nye, 32-year-old Christina Nye and their 6-year-old daughter. Their 10-year-old son was flown to Duke University Hospital with serious injuries.
The fire truck and pickup truck were unoccupied.
Northbound I-85 near Exit 191 was closed for more than six hours.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
