The approaching election and the preparations for the third anniversary of Hamas’ October 7 attack have reignited the media and public discourse on the massacre and the failures that made it possible. This is a fundamental, moral discussion about questions of responsibility and its cost, but also a very emotional issue. Friday’s evening television news broadcasts opened with a tense, highly charged meeting between Shelly Meshel-Yogev, whose daughter, Libby Cohen Meguri, was murdered at the Nova music festival on October 7, and Maj. Gen. (res.) Aharon Haliva, who was appointed director of Military Intelligence two years before the massacre and resigned from the position in April 2024. Meshel-Yogev leveled harsh accusations at Haliva. Not only is he the primary person responsible for the massacre, in her eyes, but he has also avoided meeting with her and her family in the years since. Haliva was visibly stunned.
