SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Charges have been filed and an arrest made against a worker for the US Postal Service in Utah over allegations of election fraud.
Officials with the US Department of Justice said the worker admitted to throwing away around 300 election ballots and other mail.
Charges were announced at a news conference in Washington, DC.
The worker was identified as 34-year-old Damon Matai Seei from Payson. Officials said his postal route was in Eagle Mountain.
Those in attendance included Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter, US Attorney for the District of Utah, Melissa Holyoak, and officials from both the Homeland Security Investigators and USPS Office of Inspector General.
The ballots were going out to voters. McCotter said Seei admitted to throwing the ballots in the dumpster in Jun.
Holyoak said it did not appear that Seei had a political agenda. There was no indication the ballots were disposed of because of voters’ political affiliations.
Lt. Governor Deidre Henderson released the following statement:
“Today the DOJ announced charges against a Utah postal worker accused of throwing away more than 300 mail ballots in the June primary election. U.S. Attorney Melissa Holyoak, correctly asserted that those Utahns’ right to vote was thrown away when their ballots were tossed in the trash. I’m grateful that the department takes cases of denying lawful voting just as seriously as alleged illegal voting.”
