Conservative commentator Scott Jennings admitted on Tuesday that he’s had “doubts” about President Donald Trump’s ability to make a deal diplomatically ending the Iran war.

Jennings, who is reportedly in the running to be the White House’s next press secretary, began his appearance on CNN NewsNight by once again emphasizing that, in his eyes, Iran has “already” been “annihilated.”

After enduring questioning from fellow panelists on why, then, the United States remains in the region, CNN’s Sara Sidner asked, “You said [Trump’s] not worried about politics. Shouldn’t he be?… More and more [Republicans] are coming out, saying, ‘This war is costing us. We need to end this war immediately.'”

“All presidents and all political actors have to worry about politics at some level,” Jennings responded. “I do think there’s an argument to be made for just operating on national security and what you think is in the best interest of American national security, even if there are political consequences.”

“Even if Americans say, ‘Hey, we can’t afford this war?'” confirmed Sidner.

“I’ve had my doubts about whether we will ever be able to make a deal,” conceded Jennings, as his fellow panelists attempted to interrupt him.

“You’re saying it’s going great?” Josh Rogin, The Washington Post’s lead global security analyst, asked.

“I think the U.S. military has performed the most heroic mission,” Jennings started.

“That’s a no,” declared Rogin. “You can’t even say it!”

“And created results beyond anyone’s wildest expectations,” Jennings continued. “We have absolutely decimated them.”

“If military power could solve the problem, we would have won the war in Vietnam,” Rogin countered.

Speaking on Tuesday at the United Nations General Assembly, Trump spoke of a “big decision” he soon has to make, shockingly adding:

Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before — maybe one of the greatest in the Middle East, or even the world? Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic, and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again? Do I drive them into hell, with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness for generations?

But I believe we’ll make a deal right after the election, because it doesn’t make sense for them not to. They’re waiting to see how I do in the midterm election. What they don’t realize is that I’m not running. I did that already, and won in a landslide. We won in a giant landslide, and I’ll be here for two and a half years. The Republican Party is running, and I will be helping them, but I am not running.

Watch above on CNN.
