NH Libertarian Party post sparks bipartisan outrage over assassination threats

  • September 23, 2026

CONCORD, N.H. (WCAX) – Threats of assassinations on social media targeting elected Democrats in New Hampshire have sparked bipartisan outrage across the Granite State, drawing condemnation from lawmakers all the way up to the governor.

New Hampshire’s Libertarian Party boasts of 10,000 members, though candidates rarely appear on the ballot. Its current chair, Jeremy Kauffman, ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate in 2022, getting just 2% of the vote. Now, the party is getting national attention thanks to a post on X.

“We openly support the assassination of basically every elected Democrat in New Hampshire. But if you don’t have the balls to do that then you should probably vote GOP,” the post read.

It sparked quick rebuke from Democrats. “This was a really specific call to violence against a particular group of people that I happen to be a part of,” said New Hampshire Executive Councilor Karen Liot Hill.

“Our citizen-led government is a model for the nation, and we must ensure everyone can engage in democracy without fear of intimidation or violence,” Democratic Congressman Chris Pappas said in a statement.

Cinde Warmington, the Democratic nominee for governor, wrote: “Threats of political violence against elected Democrats — against anyone — are abhorrent, beyond the pale, and endanger public servants across our state.”

“This is not liberty. This is anti-American. It is downright dangerous. And no matter where you fall, which party you are in, where you fall on the ideological spectrum, this is something that should unite us as Americans in condemning,” Rep. Maggie Goodlander said.

Republicans are weighing in as well. Lily Tang Williams, who is running for Congress, called the post “dangerous and unacceptable.”

Republican Gov. Kelly Ayotte also put out a statement that those responsible would be held accountable. “This type of behavior is irresponsible and dangerous. Violent rhetoric has no place in our politics, and threats like this should be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” she said.

It is unclear whether the post would be considered criminal for inciting violence or considered protected free speech.

The New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office is aware of the post but declined to comment.

“It’s not doing anything to help people, and it is doing a lot to waste time and resources, and it’s really outrageous,” Liot Hill said.

A request for an interview with the New Hampshire Libertarian Party resulted in a statement: “LPNH believes that New Hampshire is healthier and freer when anyone who would enact an income tax fears for their life.”
