Minnie Hauk is very much the one to beat after her Betfred Oaks success at Epsom, form that has been emphatically franked by the runner-up, Whirl, and she’s 6lb clear on Timeform ratings complete with a ‘Horse in Focus’ flag and ‘p’ next to her figure. She wasn’t quite as impressive in the Irish Oaks, but she didn’t need to be, and remains open to more improvement. Estrange looks the main danger but there is a question mark about the fast ground for her, while both Garden Of Eden and Qilin Queen have plenty to find if they’re to trouble the favourite.
Fran Berry Insight
It’s a shame there are only four runners in the Group 1 Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks but in MINNIE HAUK we have a dual Classic winner who looks on the improve.
We were lucky enough to be at Ballydoyle last week for Sporting Life and she looked exceptionally well, better than she had done at the Curragh, and she looks to me like she’s going the right way as the season progresses.
It’s hard to see her getting beat as the odds suggest. She gets 9lb on the weight-for-age allowance from her chief market rival Estrange and on a fast surface it’s difficult to envisage David O’Meara’s filly beating her.
Indeed, with the ground conditions in mind, perhaps Garden Of Eden could take the silver medal position behind her stablemate Minnie Hauk.
She’s certainly one to consider for forecast bets as I don’t think she’ll be totally sacrificed as a pacemaker. She likes a fast surface and given she also gets the 9lb from Estrange I could see her finishing second behind Minnie Hauk for a Ballydoyle one-two.
Qilin Queen bounced back to winning form in France, but she got the run of the race that day and will find this much tougher.
Again, it’s all about Aidan O’Brien who can become the joint leading trainer in the history of the race, along with Matthew Dawson and Sir Michael Stoute, with his ninth Yorkshire Oaks victory.
