PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – A man wanted for a homicide in Gresham and a police dog were killed when U.S. Marshals tried to make an arrest near a southeast Portland hotel on Thursday afternoon, according to police.
According to the Gresham Police Department, the investigation began around 7 a.m. on Thursday, when officers were sent to a welfare check at a home on Southeast Market Street near Southeast 182nd Avenue. They found a man who had been shot and killed inside his home, police said.
On Friday, Gresham police said the victim had been identified as 60-year-old Jeff Thompson.
Gresham detectives then said they identified a suspect using “public safety cameras” and license plate tracking cameras.
Shortly before noon, the suspect was spotted near Southeast Pine Street and Southeast 99th Avenue in Portland.
Gresham officers asked for help from the U.S. Marshals Service Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force and other local agencies to arrest the suspect. According to the Portland Police Bureau, the attempted arrest happened around 1:45 p.m. near the Chestnut Tree Inn at Southeast 97th Avenue and Southeast Oak Street, just north of Southeast Stark Street.
According to GPD, the man tried to run from police and “an officer-involved shooting occurred.”
Portland police said two Portland officers and two officers from “other agencies” were involved and are now on paid leave.
The suspect was hit with gunfire and despite lifesaving efforts, he died at the scene, Portland police said. Police also said they found a gun nearby.
Police Chief Bob Day said the U.S. Marshal’s presence in Portland was not related to immigration enforcement, but is part of the federal government’s help with combating violent crime.
“This was not an immigration related event, even though we have a federal presence out here,” Day said. ”We do work closely with our federal partners. We rely heavily upon them to be able to deal with and combat violent crime in the city.”
A guest staying at the Ramada, a hotel across the street from the Chestnut Tree, told FOX 12 they heard 20-30 gunshots.
Another witness, Ryan Kowal, said he was in the area walking his dog with his wife when he heard the gunfire.
“I wasn’t sure if we were gonna live or not because we didn’t know if they were coming our direction or where it was. It just felt so close. The only thing we knew what to do was to duck at the time,” said Kowal.
During the gunfire, PPB police dog “Kylo” was also hit and injured. He was rushed to veterinary medical care where he died.
According to Chief Day, Kylo was scheduled to retire after working for the bureau for six years, with this scheduled to be his last shift.

Also on Thursday afternoon, a police procession carried Kylo’s body from the emergency veterinarian to Oregon Humane’s Animal Crimes Forensic Center.

Police said there was no ongoing danger to the community.
The PPB Homicide Unit is investigating the shooting and asked anyone with information who has not already spoken with police to contact them at homicidetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and reference case number 26-279642.
The Gresham Police Department and East County Major Crimes Team are investigating the Gresham homicide. Anyone with information is asked to call 503-618-2719.
Police have not yet released the name of the suspect.
