Two youths are in police custody following a report of a weapon at a high school football game in Moncton on Friday night.
Codiac RCMP responded around 8 p.m. to a disturbance involving several youths at École L’Odyssée field on promenade Léopold-F.-Belliveau during a game between École L’Odyssée and Moncton High School.
“During the altercation, one of the individuals involved displayed what was believed to be a weapon,” RCMP Cpl. Luc Picard said in an email. “No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.”
At 9:09 p.m., RCMP advised the public on social media to avoid the area due to an ongoing operation, which wrapped up about 90 minutes later.
Around midnight, police confirmed that two arrests were made at approximately 10:15 p.m. One youth believed to be involved turned himself in, while officers arrested a second youth who matched the suspect’s description.
Both remain in police custody as investigators gather details. Police have not indicated whether charges will be laid.
On Friday evening, Anglophone East School District superintendent Randolph MacLean emailed families to inform them the field had been evacuated.
“We are in communication with and fully co-operating with police as they respond to the situation,” MacLean said, adding there were no injuries related to the incident.
MacLean said no further details could be made public because of a police investigation, but expressed gratitude to school staff and police for their quick response.
