ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA. (KARE) – In a break from the Trump Administration, Minnesota Speaker of the House and GOP gubernatorial candidate, Lisa Demuth, said it was time for the United States to end its war with Iran.
Demuth cited rising prices of food, agricultural costs and gas for her position.
“As we’ve watched things go forward, it is time to put an end to that war,” Demuth said at press conference on Thursday.
Demuth also brought up the fact that President Trump endorsed her primary challenger Mike Lindell, before Demuth ultimately won the contest in August.
“I was not his pick to endorse here for governor in the State of Minnesota,” she said.
Senator Amy Klobuchar, who is vying for the governor’s mansion from the DFL side, has repeatedly called for the war to end and did so again on the Senate floor Thursday.
“Our ultimate goal must be peace in the region. But more than six months into this conflict, American service members have been killed, including my constituent, Master Sergeant Nicole Amor, who was among those killed by an Iranian strike on a U.S. facility in Kuwait on March 1st. Innocent civilians across the region have also been killed, and the costs keep mounting,” said Klobuchar.
Klobuchar’s campaign attacked Demuth for what it deemed a delayed reaction against the Iran war.
“For 7 months, Lisa Demuth has refused to oppose Donald Trump’s war in Iran, staying silent as Minnesotans face crushing gas prices and rising costs thanks to the President’s war. Today, while Lisa Demuth for the first time uttered any concern about this war, Amy Klobuchar was in the Senate taking another vote to actually end this war, which she opposed from the start. Minnesotans need a Governor who is going to stand up to Donald Trump when Minnesotans are hurting – not offer half-hearted responses because she’s under attack for not standing up to Trump,” said the statement.
